Lucha Underground: All Night Long

June 17, 2015 – Los Angeles, California

No extracurriculars on this episode, they go right into the one match.

Prince Puma def. Johnny Mundo {All Night Long Match}
An All Night Long match is Ironman rules, but with a TV-time time limit, and points can only be scored by pinfall or submission. They showed the countdown clock for the first time about five minutes into the match, revealing that the time limit was set at about 38 minutes. Puma won the first fall with a roll up at 5:21. Mundo took advantage of the no-disqualification rule and pinned Puma with his hands on the ropes at 9:22 after Puma blocked the End of the World. Matt Striker made a Hornswoggle-hiding-under-the-ring joke when Mundo pulled a bunch of plunder from there. Puma piledrives Mundo through a crate, but Mundo came back with a crowbar to the face and went up 2-1 at 14:02. Then he immediately hits the Moonlight Drive and goes up 3-1 at 14:36. And just after that he hits the End of the World to go up 4-1 at 15:32. That’s a brilliant two minutes of logic, even if it kind of breaks all other Ironman matches. Then they spent a good deal of time wandering around the Temple.

Mundo took a ladder up to the bandstand to burn time and cut a promo. Puma bopped him with a 2×4 and a guitar. Then they tumbled off the bandstand and through a table stack. That was enough for Puma to get a second point at 28:29. He hit the Vertigo at 30:13 for a third point. Mundo decided to bail and run out the clock. He even baited Puma into going for a dive and then bailed again. This is great stuff. As is Alberto el Patron returning to beat on the man who put him through a window and kick him down the Temple stairs. Puma hit a springboard 450 splash to tie things up at 34:13. Patron jumped on the mic and said that he was coming for whoever would be champion in three minutes. After a wild final few minutes, Puma hit the 630 senton to take the lead at 38:31, and then the clock expired at 38:36.

Much like the Grave Consequences match, this stood apart from the typical LU fare because they had to slow things down to make good on the stipulation. That said, this had a very LU vibe, with the wild locales, Patron’s promo, and the use of walkaround brawling instead of rest holds to eat up time. Mundo’s chickenshit heel stuff at the end elevated this a lot, and Patron’s involvement gave the match some closing juice. ****½
