WWE ECW 137

January 20, 2009 – Rosemont, Illinois

Matt Hardy comes to the ring for a chat. His brother Jeff was in a pyrotechnic accident on Smackdown, and Matt doesn’t think Jeff’s string of bad luck is accidental. It’s announced that Matt will get a rematch for his title this weekend at the Royal Rumble. Jack Swagger comes out and talks trash about Jeff, so Matt attacks him.

Ricky Ortiz def. Adam Evans
Just a squash. Ortiz wins in 2:17 with a big splash. N/A

Teddy Long tries to talk Tommy Dreamer out of his retirement ultimatum. Paul Burchill interrupts to demand a rematch with DJ Gabriel. Long doesn’t like that, so he gives him the Boogeyman.

The Boogeyman def. Paul Burchill
You can see the precursor for the Fiend’s red light matches here, as the Boogeyman’s red smoke lingers over his matches during this run. Makes me wish they’d just do this with the Fiend’s matches because it doesn’t cause migraines and is only a little annoying. Katie Lea ran in and got Burchill disqualified at 1:53. Nothing doing here. ¾*

John Morrison def. the Miz, Mark Henry, and Finlay {Fatal Four Way Match}
These were ECW’s four representatives in the Royal Rumble. This paled in comparison to the last fatal four way ECW main event, which is surprising given the only difference here was Henry in the place of Hardy. The action moved consistently but rather than layered stories, we mostly just got Henry versus everyone here. Todd Grisham tries to say that Finlay’s club won’t be allowed in the Rumble, but I don’t remember ever seeing anyone get disqualified in that match. Idiot. In the end, Henry walked out, Finlay hit Miz with the Celtic Cross, and then Morrison stole the pin on Miz at 6:06. **½

Okay, let’s check out that rematch at the Royal Rumble.

Jack Swagger def. Matt Hardy {ECW Championship Match}
Swagger finally started channeling Kurt Angle here, working a limb and countering Hardy’s signature moves to suplexes. I appreciate that. Hardy also hit a Mutasault so nasty it could made Keiji spit mist at home. Swagger won with the gut wrench powerbomb at 10:27. That finish was a bit clumsy, which is a bummer because you could see what they were going for and didn’t quite pull it off. ***
