WWE ECW 84

January 15, 2008 – Birmingham, Alabama

The show started with World Heavyweight Champion Edge coming to the ring. He ragged on his upcoming challenger Rey Mysterio, and then thankfully tangentially connected this whole thing to ECW by showing clips from Mysterio’s match against Chavo Guerrero from Smackdown after which the Major Brothers, who are now the Edgeheads (which hadn’t been mentioned on ECW one time) attacked Mysterio. Then he brought out CM Punk. I would have loved to see a match between the two, so of course it happened a few days later… on Smackdown. Why even have ECW? Edge goaded Punk into giving Guerrero another match, so at least there’s a storyline reason for that happening this time around. Guerrero came out and Punk said the quiet part out loud when he pointed out how repetitive this all was. Edge & Guerrero then beat up Punk and the crowd didn’t care.

John Morrison & The Miz def. Robbie & Rory
I guess this was how they planned to reheat Miz & Morrison, as this was short, fine, but nothing special. *½

Kofi Kingston finally debuts next week. Then Kelly Kelly came out to the ring and announced that next week, ECW will be in HD. Then she took off her robe to hype an HD best body contest between the usual suspects.

Kane def. Colin Delaney
This had the usual pre-match interview with Tazz. This show is so is a boring ass version of Groundhog Day. Kane squashed him this time around. Did anyone care about this when it was happening? N/A

Shelton Benjamin def. Nunzio
This was another boring squash, this time with a botched finish. N/A

Chavo Guerrero def. CM Punk
This was another dull bout between two guys who don’t have much chemistry, this time ending when Edge knocked out Punk with his title belt allowing Guerrero to win by count out. What a garbage angle. Joey Styles says the quiet part out loud, “Well that sucks.” *½
