NXT 79

August 23, 2011 – Calgary, Alberta

The show starts with Darren Young bullying Matt Striker into saying that he’s the better man. Striker relents, but Young attacks him anyway. William Regal makes the save.

Trent Baretta def. Tyson Kidd
Someone had trashed Kidd’s things in the locker room, and his garment bag has more mysterious Japanese writing on it. That’s great. Baretta gets a Smackdown-styled graphic during his entrance, so we’re moving even farther away from the original format. During the match, Todd Grisham asks William Regal if Kidd can keep up his style and pace for 2-5 years and Regal says yes. Regal was right, but just barely. Kidd gets distracted by the Japanese writing on the big screen and Baretta gets his first win over Kidd (he’d lost to him a bunch on Smackdown). This was very similar to the Justin Gabriel match, as Kidd and Baretta didn’t need all the time they were given to tell the story they had. On the other hand, it had a very invested hometown crowd for Kidd, and while the finish was kind of lazy and trite, it did move the Yoshi Tatsu/Kidd feud forward well. ***¼

Maxine def. AJ
The less said about this match the better. The commentators are playing it straight now, but they had trouble not criticizing how bad this was outright, saying a few times that they hoped it would end soon. Hornswoggle gets hurt during the finish, so Titus O’Neil makes the save after the match. ¼*
