NXT 173

June 12, 2013 – Winter Park, Florida

Antonio Cesaro def. Sami Zayn
This wasn’t as dramatic as their first encounter, but certainly had a few unique and inventive segments that were unlike anything I’ve seen before. I’m looking forward to the inevitable rubber match. ***¼

In a backstage segment, Bayley has a new look (her current look). She’s shy and kind of autistic but my rage at how stupid this gimmick started is tempered because Bayley’s bow has BMO from Adventure Time on it.

Scott Dawson & Garrett Dylan def. Baron Corbin & Travis Tyler
I’m excited for Dawson to transition from Trevor Murdoch ripoff to Arn Anderson homage. This is a collection of four of the most uninspired wrestling names ever. Regal gets Dawson and Dylan confused when talking about the on commentary, and that’s about the most interesting thing about this match. ¾*

Corey Graves, Adrian Neville, and Kassius Ohno are all in a tizzy over who gets to fight Bray Wyatt first. Regal tries to mentor them and get them to work together against the Family. The sitcom-ish way in which they all face the camera while talking to each other is ridiculous. Once Neville and Graves leave, Ohno grovels to Regal more, saying one day he’ll find a way to apologize and pay him back.

Alicia Fox def. Bayley [Quarterfinal Match]
So now it seems that Bayley’s gimmick is basically that she’s Eugene. She’s happy and sweet (and mentally handicapped?) and then she gets upset and starts beating the hell out of Fox. Then Fox finishes with an ugly scissor kick. With the exception of Bayley’s little flurry, this was pretty bad. *

Bo Dallas def. Big E Langston [NXT Championship Match]
Dallas is pretty definitively over as a heel. The match actually had a really solid story, with Dallas getting tossed around like everyone else, but then showing just a little more effort so that he lasted as long as Conor O’Brian rather than all the other squashed geeks. But the exposed turnbuckle finish was pretty weak, mostly because Dallas didn’t actually pull the turnbuckle pad all the way off. I’m happy that we can, presumably, have consistent title matches now. **½
