NXT 183

August 21, 2013 – Winter Park, Florida

AJ Lee def. Bayley [WWE Divas Championship Match]
Let’s just dump the naivety of Bayley’s gimmick. These two are both real good, and the character totally overwhelms. **

Conor O’Brian & Rick Victor def. Michael Zaki & Ron Hicks
Wow, those jobbers have terrible wrestling names. I don’t review squashes, and it’s annoying that the Ascension’s boring, repetitive entrance is longer than their matches. Actually, I take that back. I don’t need to watch long Ascension matches. N/A

CJ Parker def. Baron Corbin
Given how things worked out for these guys in WWE, this is a pretty wild dynamic to see. Though I hear Parker is crazy popular in New Japan now. Like Bayley and the Ascension, this is too much character and not enough action. Then a character I love, Tyler Breeze, rushes out to confront Parker about photobombing his selfies. Breeze really channels Zoolander hard in this promo. *

Dolph Ziggler def. Alexander Rusev
This is not the debut (I’m not counting his battle royal appearance) I’d expect Rusev to get. I have to give some credit to NXT for not just letting him squash some goons like every other big guy who starts in the company. And he really made the most of it, hitting a lot of impressive offense for a dude his size and making it look in a few moments like he’d beat the former World Champ. ***

Antonio Cesaro def. Sami Zayn [2/3 Falls Match]
The first two falls really set the tone for the final one. In the first, Zayn surprised Cesaro and pinned him, the very kind of victory that Cesaro claimed was the only way Zayn could beat him. In the second fall, Cesaro beat Zayn down and demoralized him, forcing him to tap to chinlock so that he’d have enough energy to keep fighting in a third fall. And in that third fall, Zayn realized his only way to win would be how he won the first, and went for quick pins from every angle, while Cesaro tried to use his strength to end Zayn. I would have let Zayn have the win, but I understand why they went the way they did. Cesaro is on another level and I’m not sure why he’s not pushed to the moon on the main roster. This is the best of all their matches, including Arrival, btw. ****
