NXT 291

August 12, 2015 – Winter Park, Florida

William Regal doesn’t want to make the title match at Takeover a ladder match because he doesn’t want to give credibility to Kevin Owens’ claims that he’s corrupt. But Finn Balor has agreed to a ladder match, so the ladder match will happen. Regal makes sure to wish both competitors good luck.

Tye Dillinger def. Solomon Crowe
Dillinger’s Perfect 10 gimmick makes its official debut here, though Corey Graves admits it’s been in the works for a while. This was better than I expected it to be, especially because when a gimmick is debuted the match is usually a squash. Dillinger’s finisher looked better on the replay that it did during the match, so they’re going to need to be careful about that. **½

Baron Corbin def. Axel Tischer
Just stop, please. The crowd now chants “boring” at Corbin, so this thing has truly jumped the shark. Corbin says the quiet part out loud about himself, “If you step in the ring with me, it’s the same, tired story.” That’s pretty incredible. Steve Cutler tries to attack him and gets laid out. Samoa Joe comes out because that’s how desperate they are to get this boring long-hair over. Corbin won’t wrestle him now, but he does sucker punch him and go for his finisher, only to get caught and choked out. The crowd chants, “Thank you, Joe.” N/A

In a promo on Jushin Liger, Tyler Breeze sort of implicates himself in the attack on Hideo Itami. It’s never mentioned again.

Finn Balor def. Marcus Louis
I feel like Balor isn’t that well served by squashing annoying characters. Owens runs out to attack Balor after the match. They have a fun brawl, ending with Owens hitting the pop up powerbomb. N/A

The Vaudevillains say that they have found a way to contain the Bliss Factor. Alexa Bliss walks up and slaps them both.

Bayley def. Becky Lynch {Number One Contender’s Match}
This was a bit of a step down from last week’s match, and from the Women’s Championship match last month, but it was still pretty good. The storyline is also good, as Bayley is defeating the NXT originals who are ready to move on to the main roster on her way to being the headliner for this division in NXT. ***¼
