NXT 334

May 11, 2016 – Winter Park, Florida

Finn Balor starts the show with a promo. The commentators try to explain away the weird title change by saying that Balor had taken on all comers, and unfortunately for him, Joe was one of those comers. That doesn’t work for a couple of reasons: 1) Balor actually didn’t take on very many challengers during his 10-month reign and 2) house show angles, like Balor making frequent non-televised defenses, should be wholly separate from NXT TV. Balor starts cutting a promo that actually puts the situation into perspective, but it’s annoyingly cut short by Elias Samson. Samson sings Balor a song and gets Eva Marie levels of heat for it. Wow. Balor hits him with the Pele Kick to a huge ovation, then throws Samson’s guitar at him. That was pretty damn cool.

They show a collage of tweets and try to say that Eric Young’s debut lit up social media, but half of the accounts they showed included @wwe, @wwenxt, @tripleh, @therock, @theericyoung. In fact only two non-WWE affiliated accounts were visible. EXPOSED!

Jason Jordan & Chad Gable def. Corey Hollis & John Skyler
The crowd is heavy on the Kurt Angle allusions for American Alpha tonight. I don’t like rating squashes, but this was a fun one. The Revival came out to distract American Alpha, but our heroes won anyway because they’re great. N/A

Shinsuke Nakamura def. Alex Riley
Nakamura’s flippant response to Riley’s promo last week was succinct and hilarious. This was a quick squash to send Alex Riley into early retirement. So long! N/A

Austin Aries tells William Regal that he didn’t come to NXT to just be another guy. Regal agrees that Aries deserves more. Blake & Murphy interrupt to demand another title shot. Aries is insulted that they barged in and didn’t even bring Alexa Bliss with them. Bliss pops up so Aries is a little bit less mad. That was kind of funny. Next week, Blake & Murphy will take on Aries and a partner of his choosing. Aries doesn’t need a partner, but he’s going to call one up anyway. Who could it be?!

Alexa Bliss def. Rachel Ellering
Rachel is Paul’s daughter, and a powerlifting champion. Corey Graves makes a joke about Bliss beating every legend’s child, and it strikes me as interesting that so many wrestlers’ daughters are getting into the business. Bliss is pretty much getting by on how big and expressive her eyes are at this point, and there wasn’t much more to this squash than that. N/A

Finn Balor def. Elias Samson
As much as I liked the opening segment, I’m not sure why Samson is being given JTTS status in the main event if he can’t really handle the action that a main event slot requires. After the match, Balor says that he’s possessed like a Demon with getting the title back. Samoa Joe comes out but Regal stops them from fighting. He books them in a rematch for the title at Takeover. Joe says he doesn’t deserve it, but that claim makes no sense. The logic that Finn only lost the title because he wasn’t the Demon at the house show is alluded to, and I dig that angle. Finn dives onto Joe to end the show. **
