NXT 406

August 16, 2017 – Winter Park, Florida

The show starts with a contract signing between Ember Moon and Asuka. Remember when they had their first contract signing and it was backstage and pretty short? I miss that episode. Moon says that Asuka surpassed even Goldberg. Did Goldberg lose any battle royals during his streak? He didn’t, I checked. Asuka screams back at her in Japanese. I hate these things.

Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford def. Lars Sullivan & Chris Silvio
Mauro Ranallo is blatantly ripping off Mr. Peanutbutter’s gimmick of crazy stretch analogies at this point. Also, if Sullivan can’t handle it when his tag team partners lose, why not just give him a singles match? This angle doesn’t make sense and is already played out. On the other hand, Ford is very funny, running through the crowd and wanting no part of Sullivan. This was a lot more fun than the Street Profits’ debut. After the match, Sullivan carries Sylvio outside the arena and beats him up there instead of in the ring. *½

Ruby Riott def. Billie Kay
Ruby deserves better than dealing with Kay. She did a lot of fun things in this, and Kay was Kay. Royce Da 5’7 talks trash to Riott after the match. **¼

Roderick Strong nc. Drew McIntyre
If Strong wins, he gets a title shot after Takeover, definitely against Bobby Roode but presumably also against McIntyre if he wins. Ranallo says “Sick Kick” early on in the match, so I forgive him for many of the annoying things he’s been going. I came up with that move name, you see. After a good (but far from great) match, Roode runs out and attacks both guys. ***

Because the Cruiserweight Championship is now an NXT title and I’m reviewing every title defense of the WWE/NXT Cruiserweight Championship and post them on the NXT TV reviews that preceded them, here’s the title defense from SummerSlam 2017, and the rematch from two days later on 205 Live.

August 20, 2017 – Brooklyn, New York

Neville def. Akira Tozawa {WWE Cruiserweight Championship Match}
What was the point of putting the title on Tozawa a few days ago? Did they just want to squeeze another match out of this feud because now Tozawa can get another contractual rematch? Yikes. Neville straight up looked bored here, but Tozawa was game to get the kids the crowd fired up for his shouts and sentons. Neville won in 11:47 with the Red Arrow. ***

August 22, 2017 – Brooklyn, New York

Neville def. Akira Tozawa {WWE Cruiserweight Championship Match}
This was the best match between the two. They went with an “I know my opponent so well that we’re going to scout a lot of each other’s moves,” story, which is fine though rang a little hollow given the lack of depth to their previous matches. Still, the tale they told was more engaging than the tales that went untold in their previous matches, the action was interesting, and the finish was strong as Neville won with the Brutalizer at 16:13. Neville gets cocky on the microphone after the match, only to be interrupted by Enzo Amore of all people. This guy was such bad Kzy ripoff and he didn’t even know it. Neville won’t even acknowledge him. The greatest indictment of WWE was that this guy was more over than the rest of the 205 Live roster. ***½
