NXT 423

November 29, 2017 – San Antonio, Texas

Umm, what is this venue? It looks like there’s maybe 200 people in the crowd, and the hard camera is facing a side of the ring that has 20 fans behind it. Are there going to be four episodes here? I hope not.

Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford def. Tino Sabbatelli & Riddick Moss
Sabbatelli & Moss are very not good. This was some house show nonsense, which is to say it got way more time than they needed and was totally fine but I’ll forget that it happened by tomorrow. Seriously though, why is this house show an episode of NXT TV? **½

Kairi Sane def. Royce Da 5’7
Uch, they even got a ring announcer with a weird, Kermit the Frog sounding voice. What is this episode?! I think I’ve realized that my problem with Royce isn’t about her in-ring skill (she’s definitely better than Billie Kay), it’s that she treats wrestling like it’s a cartoon. Nobody in life would make the faces or move the way she moves when she’s angry, and it just really takes me out of the whole thing. She and Kay are like a vaudeville act, seemingly taking more inspiration from Lucy Ball than Lucy Furr (better known as Daffney. I know that was a stretch and I know there are better women’s wrestlers to choose from but I wanted the Lucy connection. Get off my back). The match was decent. **

Tyler Bate & Trent Seven def. Pete Dunne & Mark Andrews
The gimmick here is that Bate & Seven didn’t like the way Dunne left Wolfgang out to dry when the Undisputed Era attacked. Before this, the UK guys were more or less sticking together. Even if they fought among themselves, they don’t like when one of them leaves an ally to be beaten by an outsider. Andrews agreed to team with Dunne because, like Wolfgang, Dunne has said that if he teams with him and wins, he’ll get a shot at Dunne’s title. I’m good with all of this, and very happy the British guys are getting a storyline. This might not be fair, but I think I’m grading this one on a sliding scale. These guys are capable of much more than the match they put on here, which was one or two notches higher than paint-by-numbers. Bate pinned Dunne, so he should be in line for a title shot. Dunne turns on Andrews after the match. Pretty sure that doesn’t end up going anywhere. ***¼
