NXT 501

April 10, 2019 – Brooklyn, New York

There was no NXT 500 because the numbering system includes Takeover specials and I hate it I hate it I hate it.

I need to go on record and say that I also hate the new NXT opening video. The cheesy bits wherein everyone on the roster “sings” the new song together in the ring is just so lame.

Candice LeRae def. Aliyah
Speaking of lame, an Aliyah match. I watched this live and forgot the finish fifteen minutes after it ended. I’m not exaggerating, though to be fair I may have been looking at my phone when the match ended. This time around I actually watched the thing, and it was fine I guess? Aliyah didn’t embarrass herself, but she inspired no reaction from the crowd. LeRae came close to goofing her Asai moonsault finish, but pulled it out in the end. *¾

Velveteen Dream was hanging out at WrestleMania and got into a bit of an argument with Buddy Murphy, who had just lost his cruiserweight title to Tony Nese. I would be happy to watch that match if WWE or NXT would like to present it to me. Also, Kushida signed with NXT, which actually happened last week but I’m pumped about it so I’m going to remind you of it.

Jaxson Ryker def. Danny Burch
McGuinness is now calling Burch & Oney Lorcan the BritAm Brawlers, so I guess that’s official. I also don’t really get the point of giving the rather limited, 36-year-old Ryker these squash wins over the more interesting Burch & Lorcan. I guess Burch is pretty old too. This was structured just like Ryker’s match against Lorcan, but had a little more juice because it was performed in front of 40-times as many people. The Forgotten Sons beat up the Brawlers after the match. **½

They show a post-match interview from Pete Dunne at Takeover. Dunne says there will be a rematch. This clip was weirdly not shown on NXT UK earlier today, but was referenced by Jordan Devlin and Radzi Chinyanganya. That’s just bad editing and continuity. After the main event on Takeover, Adam Cole takes out his frustrations on Roderick Strong, who he seems to blame for the loss. Then, Dream vs. Murphy for Dream’s title is made official for next week and I pee a little.

Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford def. Fabian Aichner & Marcel Barthel
Montez Ford is a treasure. Everyone in this match is fun but Ford is an actual treasure. This match was just good old fashioned tag team wrestling, spiced with Ford’s leaping acrobatics and the European Union’s great villainy. It wasn’t all pretty, but everyone in this match is really adept at logical, entertaining tag wrestling. They also get a few extra points for the way Ford removes Barthel from the ring after the match. Can one of these teams get a real push now please? ***¼
