EVOLVE 146

March 1, 2020 – Melrose, Massachusetts

Avery Taylor & Natalia Markova def. Brandi Lauren & Jessi Kamea
Kamea & Lauren beat up an aspiring planted wrestler in the crowd until Taylor & Markova made the save, leading to this match. Points for attempting to make do some kind of angle, regardless of how poorly it was executed. This was a perfectly fine little tag match, with heels doing heel things and the babyfaces overcoming anyway. I was kind of surprised to see NXT’s Kamea take the pin, as she went down to the Encore at 6:28. **

Brendan Vink def. Leon Ruff
In a pre-match promo, while complaining about not being allowed to challenge for the title, Vink finally addresses that he has a giant ass. I was enjoying the hell out of this when it ended abruptly at 6:23. I’m not surprised that they had Vink hit a big boot out of nowhere for the win, as he’s the guy being groomed for NXT TV and a spot higher on the card in EVOLVE, but I could have used a lot more of this very well-done big man-little man match. ***

Denzel Dejournette & Jon Davis def. Adrian Alanis & Liam Gray
This was fun. Both teams brought cool tandem offense, and with the exception of one botched spot they all looked like they knew what they were doing. The finish saw Dejournette block an Ace Crusher from Gray and throw him to Davis, who hit Three Seconds Around The World for the win at 12:59. ***

Mansoor def. Anthony Greene
Where was this version of Mansoor in the AR Fox match?! He killed it with Greene here. They told a great story where the very quick Mansoor got overzealous and paid for it, only to become more measured later and find success. I really enjoyed this, and it makes me want to see Mansoor and Fox redo their match with this kind of energy. Mansoor won in 13:39 with a twisting inverted suplex. ***¼

JD Drake def. Curt Stallion and Jake Atlas {Triple Threat Match}
Well this ruled. This was the first time I’d ever seen Atlas, and not only is he quite good but he helped to bring out great performances from Stallion and Atlas. At every point in this match, all three guys were involved in the action. There was a touch of indie nonsense, but it mostly worked given the chaotic choreography. I really loved the finish, which saw Drake hit Atlas with a northern lariat and shove him out of the ring, then take Stallion to the floor on the other side of the ring and hit the Drillbit. That put enough distance between Atlas and the pin, which Drake picked up at 10:59. ****

Then, Keith Lee was the guest ring announcer for the main event, but no NXT guys were in it so I ain’t spending my time on it.
