NXT UK 91

NXT UK is now in full stall mode while travel bans exist across the world. Andy Shepherd hosts this retrospective from his living room. This episode looks back at the beginning of the brand.

January 15, 2017 – Blackpool, Lancashire

Tyler Bate def. Jordan Devlin {Quarterfinal Match}
This is from the tournament to crowd the first UK Champ. It seems a bit random that they’d show this and not the finals of the tournament, which Bate won. Every match they show here has little talking heads from the wrestlers, saying nothing all that interesting. As for the match, the way they played up the finish of Devlin’s opening round match was cute, but I was just so out on how weird-looking I thought Devlin was at the time that I couldn’t wait for him to be off my screen. Bate hit the Tyler Driver ‘97 for the win at 6:07. A far cry from the match they’d have in 2019. **

June 25, 2018 – RBKC, London

Zack Gibson def. Jack Gallagher {Quarterfinal Match}
From the second annual (and final) championship tournament, where the prize was a shot at the title instead of the title itself. This was another random match featuring the eventual winner. Apparently this was a long-running feud in the UK, but nobody mentioned that at the time. That could explain why it went longer than other matches in the round, but not why they weren’t really able to get into a groove or get the crowd engaged consistently. Chanting “this is awesome” at the very end does not an attentive crowd make. It wasn’t bad, just too long. Gibson got the win with the Shankly Gates at 13:37. **¾

October 17, 2018 – Cambridge, Cambridgeshire

Joe Coffey def. Mark Andrews
Now we’re at the first episode of the NXT UK weekly show. This stemmed from when the Coffey brothers attacked Andrews (and a couple other dudes) during the fatal four way the previous summer in Royal Albert Hall. This was probably the most professional that Andrews had looked in WWE, as he had tightened up his offense and pulled back on the flippy hack shit. Coffey was a little slow, but he’s a big dude and this brand needs those. Coffey hit All the Best for the Bells for the win at 7:37. Good stuff. The Coffeys beat up on Andrews after the match until Flash Morgan Webster made the save. Damn, the UK crowds used to be so much louder than they’ve been more recenty. ***

May 19, 2017 – Norwich, Norfolk

Pete Dunne def. Trent Seven {Number One Contender Match}
They call this a Hidden Gem, but it’s been available on the WWE Network pretty much since it happened. They also said it was filmed as a one-off special, but it actually was meant to be the first episode of NXT UK until WWE couldn’t get it together to start the show in time for the content on said show to be necessary to air in time for NXT Takeover: Chicago. Dunne brought the PROGRESS Championship to the ring with him. They’d announced the winner on NXT TV two weeks before it aired, which was pretty fucking annoying if you ask me. In a dark match that eventually got released on YouTube, Wolfgang injured Seven’s arm, and then in the back Dunne slammed it against a wall. I’m getting the feeling that the crowd wasn’t sufficiently mic’d, because this match was pretty nutty and they felt a little subdued for what they were watching. In any case, this was damn good, and I just wish they’d aired it before they announced the result a week and a half earlier. Dunne won in 14:45 with the Bitter End. ***¾

Dunne then calls out a few matches. His title win in Chicago over Bate, defenses over Adam Cole, Johnny Gargano, and a draw against Ricochet. His Takeover defense against Coffey. The episode ends with his post-match confrontation with WALTER.

Next week, the NXT UK Superstars will pick some of their favorite matches. Doing these compilation shows is alright with me. It’s better than nothing and keeps the brand alive in the fans’ minds. I just wish they’d choose better matches on the whole.
