NXT UK 103

The gimmick this time around is that European wrestlers living in the United States will pick their favorite NXT UK matches.

Match 5, 2020 – York, North Yorkshire

Aoife Valkyrie def. Isla Dawn
This is Nikki Cross’s pick. I wish they wouldn’t frame this as anyone’s favorite match, because that’s just not believable. I know they’re trying to focus on female accomplishments but we’re really scraping the bottom of the barrel here. I feel like there must be better women’s matches in NXT UK that haven’t been rehashed since the hiatus. Dawn’s entrance takes way too long given the crowd doesn’t care about her, and Valkyrie’s is too cheesy. This match didn’t come together as anything much, but it did give both ladies a chance to try out some new stuff (at least new to this show) that could probably work in a match that anyone cared about. Valkyrie hit the diving ax kick for the win at 4:34. *¾

WALTER, Fabian Aichner, and Marcel Barthel talk about the importance of Imperium being the NXT Tag Team Champions. It’s so important that it appears there won’t be a tag title match at NXT Great American Bash at all. The champs talk about what inspired them to become wrestlers. Aichner got hooked by Big Show and Brock Lesnar and was trained by Steve and Alex Wright. Barthel talks about his father Axel and his rivalry with Steve Wright. That’s a fun little connection. I didn’t know Barthel was second generation. Aichner says something that means something different than what he thinks it means, “NXT UK wouldn’t be what it is today without us.” Umm. Anyway, that was a good video.

March 26, 2020 – Coventry, West Midlands

Noam Dar def. A-Kid
William Regal picked this one. So now they’re just showing us matches from the last few episodes before the hiatus? This was fun, as expected, as both guys were game for a nice little sprint. I don’t get why they’re making A-Kid lose in six-minute matches so frequently. He’s clearly got the goods to do more. Dar won in 6:38 with the Nova Roller. Dar promises to win the battle royal next week. **¾

It’s picnic time for Pretty Deadly. Their romper/overall style is perfect. They see themselves as tasty snacks, and the light at the end of the tunnel. Then they kick some kid’s soccer ball away. I have the same picnic blanket.

January 15, 2017 – Blackpool, Lancashire

Pete Dunne def. Mark Andrews {Semifinal Match}
This was a Drew McIntyre pick, and it’s from the first WWE United Kingdom Championship Tournament. Finally, a match that someone would actually pick to rewatch. Cole was trash on commentary here, screwing up move names, calling Dunne “Peter Dunne,” and saying things that contradicted things he said earlier in the show. Luckily, it was only a minor distraction from an otherwise wild match. It wasn’t polished and it felt a little rushed, but it was crazy to see some of the things they did here. Dunne won in 10:39 with the Bitter End. ***½

Next week the matches shown will be NXT UK wrestlers fighting outside of the UK. Looks like we’ll be getting WALTER vs. Kushida and Toni Storm vs. Meiko Satomura. I mean, those matches are great so that’s fine.
