NXT 574

July 29, 2020 – Winter Park, Florida

They dust off the Armageddon 2000 theme music for the opening Keith Lee vs. Karrion Kross hype video.

Io Shirai & Tegan Nox def. Dakota Kai & Candice LeRae
Shirai was in a fantastic groove here. Nox didn’t really have much to do as the champ really ran roughshod over both opponents. In the end, Nox hit LeRae with the Shining Wizard and Shirai hit the moonsault to the face (why does she do that?) for the win at 10:07 shown of 13:00. Where does that leave Kai though? That’s not a very compelling way to get her into title contention. ***¼

We see a clip of Adam Cole going on the Pat McAfee Show, losing his temper when McAfee called him small and throwing a tantrum before walking off. Triple H called into the McAfee show to signal boost Cole’s apology. McAfee wants to talk to Cole face to face and bury the hatchet. I’d love to know where this is going, because I’m not interested yet.

Johnny Gargano def. Roderick Strong
Their match from 2019 was good, but held back because it was very storyline-heavy in service to the Gargano vs. Cole feud. This was free from any such issues, so the two just went out there and had a long, interesting match. These two were just fighting because Gargano blamed Strong for Bronson Reed winning the triple threat last week. The problem here was the match was just kicking into third gear when it abruptly ended with One Final Beat at 9:30 shown of 13:04 for Gargano. That was very decisive, so I guess they’re not building to a Gargano vs. Strong Iron Man Match like Gargano was teasing. ***½

Dakota Kai says she’s not a team player anymore but that she is the number one contender to Shirai’s title. That’s baffling. Rhea Ripley agrees with me, so the two of them go to see NXT GM William Regal to inevitably get booked against each other in a contender match. Then, Timothy Thatcher makes fun of Finn Balor using insider terms in his promos. Dexter Lumis watches from the shadows. Then, the Undisputed Era are having a pity party until Kyle O’Reilly gives them a pep talk.

Mercedes Martinez def. Shotzi Blackheart
I consider it a joke left on the table that Robert Stone doesn’t come out wearing boots on both of his feet. Blackheart controlled what turned out to be the entire match, which I found surprising. Then Martinez hits a Spiderplex and an Air Raid Crash for the win at 4:22. It’s not a squash when you spend the whole match losing, but Martinez did end up looking quite strong in the end. **

If they wanted NXT UK to appear to be returning, then playing a Ridge Holland promo wasn’t the way to do it. We see a clip of his unaired match against WALTER. Why didn’t they air that? He’s going to be in one of the North American Championship qualifying matches.

Lee comes to the ring to speak quietly about clocks and hourglasses. He calls out Kross, but Cameron Grimes comes out instead. He does his silly swamp boy shtick for a while and challenges Lee for his title. Lee casually beats him up. Scarlett distracts Lee in the entrance, but not enough to stop him from countering the Cave In to the Spirit Bomb. Kross cuts a promo on the big screen, criticizing Lee for letting Dominic Dijakovic get beat up. He wants the NXT Championship or he’ll make everyone suffer. Lee tells Kross to name the time and place. Unless Lee is moving to Raw or Smackdown after SummerSlam, this is a prime example of NXT writing itself into a corner.

Marcel Barthel & Fabian Aichner def. Matt Martel & Chase Parker
This is the first time the tag champs have shown up since June 17. I wonder if one or both of them got sick. It could also have been because the tag division got screwed up when Lorcan started feuding with Thatcher, Saurav decided to post NXT spoilers on Twitter, and Velveteen Dream got secretly suspended thus ending his team with Lumis before it really began. This was a total squash, with the tag champs winning with the European Bomb on Parker at 2:18. The Undisputed Era comes out after the match to attack. O’Reilly and Fish hit their finisher (which the commentators call No Man’s Land, a huge improvement over that High Low garbage), so I guess he’s back in action. N/A

Bronson Reed gets a spotlight. Later, Lumis stalks Balor in the back. Then, Regal video chats in from his home to say he won’t be bullied into making championship matches. He suggests that Kross will have to earn a title shot.

Isaiah Scott def. Jake Atlas
I guess Atlas has been out with injury (or COVID). This did what I wish Strong vs. Gargano had done, which is sprint the whole way through if you’re not going to get a ton of time. This had more high-flying and lucha-inspired action, so that was a nice change of pace. Scott won with the JML Driver at 6:35 shown of 9:57. It looks like Scott is going to be Santos Escobar’s first challenger. It’s kind of weird that Drake Maverick didn’t get a title shot and lost the feud to Escobar in a six man tag match. ***¼

Damian Priest will take on Holland and Lorcan in a triple threat qualifying match next week. Priest is my favorite to win the title. He calls himself the favorite too. I don’t think NXT should try to subvert expectations. The Undisputed Era gets a shot at the tag titles next week too.

Dexter Lumis def. Finn Balor and Timothy Thatcher {Triple Threat Semifinal Match}
Some funky camera tricks at the outset of the match give us more of Lumis’s weird high-flying displays. This time he does a lesser version of the Ricochet drive from the ring to the floor on his feet. It was dumb, but worth it for the reaction on Thatcher’s face. This was alright for a match involving Lumis, but it didn’t play to Thatcher’s strengths and so it was just barely above average overall. Lumis winning was the worst move they could make. He made Thatcher pass out to his submission hold while Thatcher was distracted holding Balor in a heel hook. **¾
