NXT 579

August 26, 2020 – Winter Park, Florida

Karrion Kross and Scarlett come out to start the show. I can’t tell if Kross has a new, bigger championship belt or if Scarlett is just really small. Probably the latter. He separated his shoulder in the match, and he knows he won’t be allowed to defend the title while injured. He vacates the title and warns whoever is waiting for him when he returns. They need to do a single elimination tournament for the title.

Wade Barrett is with Vic Joseph on commentary. That’s a solid move, though if I’m Nigel McGuinness I’m pissed. Beth Phoenix is still doing the thing remotely.

Tyler Breeze & Fandango def. Marcel Barthel & Fabian Aichner {NXT Tag Team Championship Match}
This was alright. It felt like a ton of it happened during two commercial breaks which made it super hard to get invested in the match. Fandango hit both opponents with legdrops for the win at  8:13 (shown of 15:18). Gotta say, Imperium’s reign was probably the most impotent of any in NXT’s history. I chalk a lot of that up to COVID but also just really bad booking. **¾

Timothy Thatcher tells Damian Priest he wants the first shot at his title. Without ladders, he’ll show Priest how unequipped he is at wrestling. Priest makes a dick joke. Earlier, NXT GM William Regal, Triple H, Shawn Michaels, and Matt Bloom were seen discussing the NXT Championship situation.

Tommaso Ciampa def. Jake Atlas
So much for Ciampa being in Retribution. He won with the Willow’s Bell in 52 seconds. He keeps beating on Atlas and crushes his throat after the match. He also hits him with a draping DDT off of the stretcher. That was pretty neat. I am not at all angry to see Ciampa as a heel again. N/A

Candice LeRae says she’s Tegan Nox should stay out of her way if she doesn’t want to do things the Gargano way. Later, Bronson Reed is asked about Thatcher’s challenge to Priest. Austin Theory interrupts and disrespects him. That gets him smacked. They’re walking up to the edge bringing back Velveteen Dream and this guy just weeks apart.

Shotzi Blackheart def. Mia Yim
So I guess this was supposed to be Yim vs. Mercedes Martinez, but Robert Stone came out and said Martinez wouldn’t wrestle Yim because of what happened with Rhea Ripley last week. Yim wasn’t involved in anything related to Martinez the week before, so that made no fucking sense. Then Blackheart ran over Stone with her tank again. Fine. This was okay, though a lot of it looked like they’d rehearsed it over and over. I shouldn’t be able to spot that. Blackheart won in 4:31 with a diving senton. Why have Stone be a part of this at all? If you want to do the tank gag, why not do it in the back? It’s not like they’d announced Martinez vs. Yim before the show. **

Regal comes out and says that next week’s Tuesday night episode will see a four way match of former NXT Champions meeting in a title match. Johnny Gargano, Tommaso Ciampa, Finn Balor, and Adam Cole are the guys. Duh. It’s being called NXT Super Tuesday, and the match will be an Iron Man Match. Considering Gabe Sapolsky is on the creative team, I wonder if they’ll do the ROH four way Iron Man scoring system. I also wonder if there will be ten or more commercial breaks during the match

Santos Escobar def. Isaiah Scott {NXT Cruiserweight Championship Match}
I liked this more than when it happened when both guys wore masks. I mean, this got a lot more time (off TV, on screen it was just a few more minutes) and was a title match rather than a random midcard match. The action was good, Breezango stopping Legado del Fantasma from interfering was good, but the finish was weird. Escobar put on a lucha mask and hit a headbutt for the win at 9:55 (shown of 16:43). I hope there’s a rematch and an explanation that the mask was loaded. ***¼

Kyle O’Reilly def. Drake Maverick
This was way too short but it was a hell of a spring. Maverick killed it as the underdog babyface on fire here. O’Reilly won with a heel hook at 3:25. And just as I thought, Pat McAfee’s run didn’t turn the Undisputed Era babyface at all as they beat up Maverick after the match. Killians Dain makes the save, as he too (along with Maverick) was beaten up by the UE two weeks earlier. This could be a fun duo… or not as Dain hits Maverick with a lariat. I have hope. **½

Raquel Gonzalez & Dakota Kai def. Rhea Ripley & Io Shirai
The one minute before the commercial break was really quite good, showing how much stronger Gonzalez is than Kai by having Ripley manhandle Kai but not Gonzalez. It also did a good job of reinforcing that Shirai an Ripley were at odds. Things got a little chaotic after that, but it all worked. There was some good heeling from the baddies, there was NXT remembering that Martinez and Ripley hate each other when the former attacked the latter, and then there was that attack and Ripley’s pride costing her the match when she tagged in while dazed and got hit with Gonzalez’s pumphandle powerbomb at  7:42 (shown of 10:12). Good stuff. ***¼
